My mom came into the room one time a heard me speak one of my famous statements: "Jesus stood in the street and raised his hand and said, 'Cars stop!' (pause for emphasis - then slowly but authoritatively proclaim), 'and the cars stopped.'"
Mom noticed that there was a Jewish brother and sister from around the block listening so she thought it would be good to let their mother know that I was preaching Jesus to her kids. Their mother replied, "Oh I'm not bothered about it - I've heard some of the stories!"
Fortunately, as I grew up, my theology improved thanks to learning from good biblical teachers. It reminds me of how Priscilla and Aquila helped Apollos.
[Apollos] began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately. Acts 18:26 (NIV)
I developed a love for the Bible and tried to practice the verse: Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)
This is so important. The Bible warns multiple times against false teachers. Many churches were (and are) plagued with false teaching. Revelation 2 & 3 accuse some of the 7 churches of putting up with false teaching and were warned to correct this or be removed.
Please be extremely careful to attend a church that teaches the Word correctly. You are responsible to imitate the Bereans.
Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Acts 17:11 (NIV)
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32 (NIV)
