Be sure your sin will find you out

 

One of the foolish things we do is to forget that God is aware of everything we do, and even what we say and think! At times I think mothers have that same awareness. 

When I was a young teenager my brother, Scott, and I made plans to sneak out at night and join our friends, Greg and Mike, to go pool hopping. 

We were in and out of our closet getting the proper clothes. The closet light was turned on and off by pulling a string which made a slight noise. Mom heard that and since we were supposed to be asleep by then she shouted down to our lower-level bedroom, "What going on down there?" Not sure what to say, I told her that I heard some noises in the back yard and went to check it out. I'm not sure if she bought that or not.

Mom had a neighbor lady visiting and she stayed until almost midnight. So, we had to wait until she finally left, and Mom went to sleep before we could resume our escape plans. 

The next day we were pretty tired and almost fell asleep at the dinner table. Scott had nodded off when sister, Kathy Jo, asked him to pass the salt. When she finally got his attention Mom said to Kathy Jo, "You have to forgive him. He didn't get much sleep last night. The boys were up all night protecting our property." Scott and I looked at each other with surprised looks on our faces and wondered how Mom knew!

It wasn't till this week that mom confessed how she knew. Scott was on our covered patio writing a letter to a friend and telling him all about the pool-hopping adventure. He left the letter inside his Bible on the patio and came inside. When it started to rain Mom went out to make sure his Bible wasn't getting wet. She saw the letter and read it. 

We were so glad that Mom didn't punish us, but she warned us never to do anything like that again. 

The Bible tells us:

...you may be sure that your sin will find you out. Numbers 32:23

Of course, God knows everything so there's no way we can hide anything from him. 

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:13

You spread out our sins before you— our secret sins—and you see them all. Psalm 90:8 (NLT)

Still, there are some foolish people who tell themselves that God doesn't know about their sin.

They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice.” Psalm 94:7

He says to himself, “God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees.” Psalm 10:11

There is no reason we should try hide anything from God. 

For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all. Luke 8:17 (NLT)

We must remember that He is full of compassion, slow to anger and abounding in love. He is gracious and will forgive us. He lets us know that we can avoid punishment.

Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Proverbs 28:13

Knowing that God is constantly watching all that we do, our goal should be a strong commitment to do what pleases him. Then we will be blessed with strength to face life's difficulties.

For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. 2 Chronicles 16:9
