Called to do what!?

Have you ever been asked to do something you felt totally unqualified or unequipped to do? 

Moses felt unqualified and asked God to send someone else. 

Moses said to the LORD, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” The LORD said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.” Exodus 4:10–13

 Jeremiah felt he was too young.

“Alas, Sovereign LORD,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.” Jeremiah 1:6

Gideon felt unqualified and needed some extra confirmations before he agreed.

The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” The LORD answered, “I will be with you," Judges 6:14–16

One of the classes I took at International College was a preaching class. At the end of the class each student gave a final sermon. Later, as Janet and I listened to the tape of my uninspiring sermon with my dull, monotone voice, we looked at each other and agreed "Well, we know what you're not called to do!" This was not disappointing because being a pastor was not something I wanted to be. (How God changed my heart about this and how he equipped me, is told in detail in my book.) As the Lord led me to be a pastor for almost 40 years, here are some of the verses that encouraged me.

Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. 2 Corinthians 3:5

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13

Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 1 Corinthians 1:26–27

So have faith. If God calls you to do something, He will be with you and will enable you to do it. 

The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:24
